This past June, the University of Washington’s Student Clean-up, Recycle and Move-out (SCRAM) program achieved a remarkable feat by helping save nearly 30 tons of material from the landfill. This initiative, the biggest this year, is designed to divert usable items left behind by students into the hands of local organizations and on-campus reuse groups.
As a proud partner and facilitator in this effort, Big Blue Truck, a division of Northwest Center, was on hand to help collect thousands of pounds of donated clothing and household goods. These items, along with donations for the UW Food Pantry and Downtown Emergency Service Center, were gathered during the program’s main event, which is a major collaboration between UW Recycling and Housing & Food Services. Items donated to Big Blue Truck help fund vital programs and create opportunities for kids and adults with disabilities in our area.
The SCRAM program not only reduced waste but also ensured that a massive number of valuable materials were put to good use within our community. The partnership with organizations like Big Blue Truck was a key part of the program’s success, demonstrating the power of collaboration in promoting a cycle of reuse and sustainability.
